Huntington Hospital Partners with Leadership Pasadena to Honor Veterans

Huntington Hospital Partners with Leadership Pasadena to Honor Veterans

On November 12, 2018, Huntington Hospital hosted its inaugural Veteran’s Day flag-raising ceremony at the entrance of the hospital. More than 100 nurses, physicians, employees – joined by family and friends – gathered together to recognize the service of those in our military, past and present. The hospital’s driveway was lined with American flags and names of veterans, several of which are Huntington Hospital employees.

The event was held in partnership with Leadership Pasadena, whose community leadership course helps re-mission high potential, service-driven military veterans into civilian roles. Their ultimate goal is to empower local vets to help them become civic, government and business leaders and actively engage in their new community.

“While the San Gabriel Valley is home to an estimated 30,000 veterans, there is a great need for resources for our service men and women when they return home,” said Cindy Bengston Budyzn, executive consultant, Leadership Pasadena. “On Veteran’s Day, it’s my honor to encourage citizens to be intentional, stop, think and remember and honor our veterans, especially those who are still deployed and those who gave everything to protect us. I’m proud of the work of Leadership Pasadena and thankful to the community at Huntington Hospital for honoring our veteran’s in this meaningful way.”

The event was especially personal for Huntington Hospital’s President and CEO Lori J. Morgan, MD, MBA, who shared; “As a proud daughter of a serviceman who fought in three wars, I’m so pleased to be with you today as we pay tribute to the individuals in our lives and communities who are veterans. Military service is a family affair: our Huntington family is proud to raise awareness and support for Leadership Pasadena’s local resources and programs for our veterans.”

Congratulations to our 2018 PHIL Award recipient, Les Parent, respiratory care practitioner (RCP)

Congratulations to our 2018 PHIL Award recipient, Les Parent, respiratory care practitioner (RCP)

On October 22, 2018, Les Parent, RCP, was awarded the PHIL Award at Huntington Hospital’s Annual PHIL Award ceremony during Respiratory Care Week. This annual award is part of The FACES Foundation’s* program to recognize exemplary respiratory care. The PHIL Award is the only nationally recognized hospital-based program that honors outstanding respiratory therapists, as nominated by patients, their family members, and other caregivers. PHIL stands for ‘Pulmonary Health and Illnesses of the Lungs’.

Les was nominated by a patient’s family member who wrote,“Les stood out to us because of his passion for his work and love for kids, although strict and stern – Les showed us he really cared. He was knowledgeable and well-versed and educated us with the process and why things were happening. Les and our son developed a great relationship and by his last treatment, Les was known as Uncle Les.”

Les has worked at Huntington Hospital since 1973 and has been an instrumental member of our department, especially in our pediatric areas. Les said that he was very honored to have won the award. Taking care and making a difference in peoples’ lives has been very fulfilling to him over the last 45 years. Congratulations Les! Ronnie Bueno, RCP, Kevin Durston, RCP, and Jake Miller, RCP were also nominated for the 2018 PHIL Award. All nominees received a certificate with a laminated copy of their nominations and a gift card to the Huntington Concierge.

Each year, Huntington Hospital’s Phil Award committee will select one therapist from all of the nominations it has received. The recipient will be honored during the award ceremony and presented with a certificate and an award sculpture entitled Appreciation, which was adapted by creator MK Shannon especially for The PHIL Award. The recipient also receives a full scholarship for the following year’s state respiratory conference. PHIL Award nomination forms are available on all units. They can be mailed to the PHIL Award committee c/o Respiratory Department or emailed to [email protected]. The volunteer office can also pick-up any nominations, and they can be placed in the PHIL Award bin at the staffing office. The nominations are then brought to the committee and reviewed quarterly. Those nominations are blinded so that the committee does not know who the person nominated is.

Breathing is natural and is the essence of life. Patients with lung disease cherish every difficult breath they take. Let’s continue to honor the respiratory professionals that strive to make every breath as easy as possible.

Congratulations to August’s DAISY Award Winner, Sable Williams, RN

Congratulations to August’s DAISY Award Winner, Sable Williams, RN
Sable Williams holding the Daisy award

As a designated Magnet hospital, Huntington Hospital is a recognized leader in nursing excellence. Every day, our nurses go above and beyond for our patients, and we are proud to recognize them for their efforts.

The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, and created this international award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

Huntington Hospital’s August DAISY Award winner is Sable Williams, RN. Sable was nominated by a colleague who wrote the following:

“My patient was diagnosed with an illness six months ago and underwent several procedures and treatments. The patient and her husband were angry and upset at her illness and it showed, affecting the staff. This was understandable, as they were grieving. Toward the end of her time, her husband was not ready to let go, but the patient was. She was no longer upset and was at peace. This was a difficult case and not everyone is able to “not take it personal.” There was one nurse who did just that – Sable. She was positive, caring, nurturing, loving and kind, even towards the husband who was having a difficult time. Sable gave the patient the opportunity to have control in their care. This patient did not open up to anyone, but she did with Sable. She trusted Sable. The extra love and genuine care Sable gave to the patient made her last two days alive, this is what the patient wanted. Sable listened to the patient’s concerns and needs. She went above and beyond to arrange the final wishes for her, including making sure her husband was comfortable. It’s very easy to become frustrated with difficult cases. Sable earns my respect for looking past a negative setting by reaching, caring, and genuinely connecting with this patient and her family. The smile the patient had on her face when she felt at peace will be an unforgettable image and Sable was a huge factor behind the patient’s smile before she passed away.”
