As a designated Magnet hospital, Huntington Hospital is a recognized leader in nursing excellence. Every day, our nurses go above and beyond for our patients, and we are proud to recognize them for their efforts.

The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, and created this international award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

Huntington Hospital’s December DAISY Award winner, Arsho Salazar, RN, DMC, was nominated by a colleague who wrote the following: “Arsho taught me what it truly means to work as a team. I was stunned when she offered to help split our work on a very busy day. No one had ever offered to help before, I was extremely grateful as I was already behind. We wrote up a checklist and split it up, we worked “together” and due to that, I was able to finish on time. If it were not for Arsho I would not have been able to get out on time. I paid it forward and this caused a chain reaction and cultural change on our unit. It is now the norm to work together. Not only is Arsho excellent and passionate, she is also a great person to work with. She goes out of her way to make our unit better, even if she has to do more work. We are very lucky to have her as an example of a great teammate.”

Huntington Hospital’s November DAISY Award winner Jason Ly, RN, was nominated by a patient who wrote the following: “Jason deserves this award; I have been in and out of the hospital for ten days within two weeks. I have had a great number of nurses, but Jason met me with such enthusiasm, and I could tell right away he wanted to take care of me. Right from the start, you could tell nursing is something he enjoys. He made me comfortable and explained medications and results to me – some of these things were very new to me. Jason made sure I knew what was happening to me and he was very thorough, he made me feel extremely safe. He was personable, friendly and professional; it was such a relief to have him as my nurse. He came to me with such enthusiasm and passion, I was in so much pain and I was not easy to talk to. He was always eager to help and talk to me. He listened to me and gave me advice. I have never met such a qualified nurse and a genuine good person, please give him this award because I cannot say enough about how he has helped me.”

Congratulations, Jason, and thank you for providing compassionate care to our patients.

Becker’s Healthcare has named Huntington Hospital to the 2018 edition of its list “100 hospitals and health systems with great heart programs.”

The hospitals named on this list are national leaders in cardiovascular healthcare and have invested in their cardiology and cardiovascular surgery programs. Many institutions pioneered groundbreaking procedures and remain on the forefront of heart care today. Others are high-volume centers that have exceeded national benchmarks for quality and survivorship. All have received recognition for delivering top-notch patient care, and many are also involved in clinical research and trials.

To develop this list, the Becker’s Healthcare editorial team examined several reputable rankings and award agencies, including U.S. News & World Report rankings for cardiology and heart surgery, IBM Watson Health’s cardiovascular hospital rankings, CareChex rankings for cardiac care, Blue Distinction Centers for cardiac care, and Society of Thoracic Surgeons star rankings.

Compassionate community care

Compassionate community care

John Rouse didn’t notice anything unusual as he rode his bicycle to his local Metro station that Wednesday morning. He hopped on a train as usual, headed to his job as principal of Maranatha High School in Pasadena. As the train was leaving the station, however, he started to feel woozy.

The next thing he remembers was regaining consciousness. He was on the ground. “I woke up and there were two men by my side,” John says. “These guys were awesome,” he adds. “They were calm and knew exactly what they were doing. They checked my pulse, made me comfortable, asked me questions to find out what happened and directed the conductor on where the paramedics would pick me up.”

The men who helped John on the train that day were Marvin Jimenez, RN, and Guillermo Landers, RN — two of our nurses on their way to work. “I know the first few minutes of a health crisis are the most critical,” John says, “and as a person of faith, I felt God ordained those nurses be on that train, to step forward and take care of me.”

Once at our hospital, tests determined that John had experienced syncope — a fainting spell. Since he has a heart condition, he received inpatient care for a few days as a precaution, before going back home with a clean bill of health.

“The hospital staff made me feel like part of the family while I was there,” he says, “and they made sure my wife and I knew everything that was going on,” he adds. “I really felt cared for; like my health and well-being were always put first.”

Pasadena Fire Department’s “Pasadena Goes Pink” fundraising donates over $16,000 to the Jim and Eleanor Randall Breast Center

Every year, Pasadena Fire Department partners with Huntington Hospital during October to bring awareness to breast cancer with “Pasadena Goes Pink” fundraisers. Recently, Pasadena firefighters presented a check for $16,153 to physicians, nurses and administrative staff to support the Jim and Eleanor Randall Breast Center. This generous donation is the result of fundraising at California Pizza Kitchen, merchandise sales and “filling the boot” on the streets of Pasadena. This gift will be used to ensure breast cancer screenings and treatments are available to all women in our region, including patients who cannot afford the cost of care. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Pasadena Fire Department’s Chief Washington and Danae La Trobe for their ongoing support of women’s health in our community.

Letter to the community

Letter to the community

Dear Community Members:

I am communicating with you in response to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times regarding allegations against an obstetrician, Patrick Sutton, M.D. I first want you to know that he no longer practices at Huntington Hospital.

Please know that I am deeply troubled by the allegations described in these reports. I am an administrator, but I am a clinician first. My highest duty is to ensure the safety and dignity of our patients. Every day, we work to earn the trust of the people we serve. Our directive in all situations is to put the patient in the center of the room when making a decision.

In this spirit, our Board of Directors has formed a special Committee to review policies and procedures designed to ensure the safety and dignity of our patients. In addition to me, the Committee will include members of the Board and representatives of Huntington Hospital Medical Staff leadership. The Committee will review the education, processes and procedures related to physician credentialing and more – and will solicit engagement from stakeholders during its work.

We recognize the deep trust that our patients place in us every day to safeguard their wellness. Huntington Hospital is committed to developing and implementing best practices across our organization to ensure we have the right policies in place to support our patients, employees and physicians.

Huntington Hospital remains focused on patient safety and high-quality healthcare, demonstrated by our recent “A” grade from the Leapfrog Group, placing us as one of the top hospitals in the region – and the country – in preventing medical harm and errors. Although we know there is still work left to do, we are proud of the excellent, safe care we provide – and are committed to meriting your trust for years to come.

Should you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Public Relations at (626) 397-3241. Thank you for your ongoing support of and concern for Huntington Hospital.

Sincerely,

Lori J. Morgan, MD, MBA

“I experienced my very first hospital stay at the age of 86, the entire staff was very good at all times, but one nurse stood out in doing what she was trained to do. Mary put my family and I at ease. She was prompt in responding and efficient in all tasks. She always had an upbeat manner and pleasant. Respect was shown to me in every situation. She was genuinely caring, concerned and patient in thoroughly explaining any instructions to my wife and me. Her cheerfulness was a sincere indication that she enjoyed her job and loved her patients. Her sense of humor brightened my day for my family. Thank you for making a difficult situation bearable. I really think she is the epitome of the DAISY award.”
