Patient Stories

Isaac

It seemed like no matter what Isaac Reyes did, he couldn’t lose the extra weight, so he decided to have bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. Comprehensive Support

If you or someone you know is considering the life-altering decision to undergo weight loss surgery, it is important to consider all the factors. This will be one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make.

With the Huntington Hospital Bariatrics Program, a dedicated nurse navigator guides each patient, with comprehensive resources that span pre-surgery preparations, surgery, and post-surgery recovery.

Please note, some of our support resources look different during COVID-19.

Bariatrics Nutrition Class

Huntington’s clinical nutrition counseling services offer bariatric surgery patients tailored nutrition services to prepare them for weight loss success. Well before surgery, patients attend the Bariatric Nutrition Class, which satisfies insurance requirements and provides critical information about lifestyle and diet changes after surgery. Expert clinical dietitians are also available to provide one-on-one nutritional consults to prepare patients for surgery and assist them with diet changes during recovery.

Weight Loss Support Group

Support group occurs every other week and provides an opportunity to talk to other patients about their experiences. You’ll discuss issues relating to eating, wellness, relationships, discrimination, emotional feelings, body image, etc., in a caring non-judgmental environment. All are welcome including partners and family members.

Our Bariatric Support Group is still going, we are now meeting twice a month (1st and 3rd Tuesdays) via Zoom conference call.

Other Resources

A critical step in weight loss surgery is getting all of the information you need about your surgical options. Ultimately your surgeon and other physicians are your best resource for information about the procedure. The decision to have a surgical weight loss procedure may take several office visits and consultations with more than one doctor. The results of this type of surgery can be drastic, and there are potential risks and complications which should always be discussed with your doctor.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) is another excellent resource for weight loss surgery information, and can help you understand the options and get the most out of conversations with your doctor.

The information provided here is not intended as a substitute for the opinion and advice of a qualified physician. Your best source for information is an experienced bariatric surgeon.
