Huntington Hospital Earns ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety in Spring 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Huntington Hospital Earns ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety in Spring 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

The Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C-based organization aiming to improve health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers, today released the new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. Huntington Hospital was one of 750 awarded an ‘A’ for its efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.

“We are honored to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group, once again, for providing the highest quality care to our patients,” said Lori J. Morgan, MD, MBA, president and CEO, Huntington Hospital. “This achievement is a direct result of the hard work and compassionate care of our nurses, physicians and staff who have all dedicated themselves to putting quality and patient safety above all other concerns.”

“This is the only national rating of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and death, such as medical errors, infections, and injuries,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Receiving an ‘A’ Safety Grade means a hospital is among the best in the country for preventing these terrible problems and putting their patients first, 24 hours a day.”

Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

To see Huntington Hospital’s full grade, and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit www.hospitalsafetygrade.org and follow the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade on Twitter and Facebook.

The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers the lifesaving information they need to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

National Charity League Juniors of San Marino host “baby shower” to support Huntington Hospital

National Charity League Juniors of San Marino host “baby shower” to support Huntington Hospital

On April 10, 2018, members of the National Charity League (NCL) Juniors of San Marino threw a “baby shower” at their recent meeting at Huntington Hospital to benefit the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Members gathered new preemie outfits – onesies, socks and handmade caps and supplies – all to be provided to the hospital’s NICU families at quarterly baby showers. The NCL Juniors also provided a generous donation to Huntington Hospital, which also supported the purchase of a new Giraffe Incubator for the hsopital’s NICU.

“In some instances, a baby might arrive early and spend time in our NICU, which doesn’t give families much time to have baby showers of their own,” says Brenda Burke, parent coordinator, neonatal intensive care unit, Huntington Hospital. “We are so grateful for the support of NCL Juniors. Their generous donations of clothing and supplies help our families not only feel supported during their stay at the hospital, but also when they return home with their babies.”

Go further with food for heart health

Go further with food for heart health

By: Hollie Gelberg, Ph.D., RD, and Michelle Ilan, dietetic intern

This year’s theme for National Nutrition Month is “Go Further with Food,” which encourages a selection of health-promoting foods while at the same time being mindful of food waste. Given the wide variety of food choices, choosing the “right” foods can make a huge difference in one’s health, including heart health. Health-promoting foods are those that provide more than just energy or calories; they include other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. These health-promoting nutrients can be found in every food group, especially whole grains/starches, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, low-fat/non-fat dairy (or non-dairy substitutes), and healthy fats/oils. It is important to incorporate foods from these different groups, and to consume fruits and vegetables of varying colors to increase intake of these vital nutrients.

One way to “Go Further with Food” is to choose foods that promote heart health. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet focuses on plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes (beans, lentils, peas, soybeans), and includes dairy, lean protein (fish and chicken) and fat from vegetable oils to reduce cardiovascular risks. The DASH diet is designed to lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol. It promotes reduced intake of saturated fats (fats that come from processed foods and some animal foods) and recommends low- or fat-free dairy sources. Because the DASH Diet aims to reduce hypertension, it limits sodium consumption. Finally, the DASH Diet emphasizes limiting sugar-sweetened beverages and sweets, which is vital to any healthy diet.

Embody the spirit of National Nutrition Month and “Go (even) Further with Food” by being mindful of the environment and minimizing food waste. By planning ahead—from shopping, to preparation, to serving, food waste can be reduced by taking only what is needed. The impact made by the food you choose and the amounts you buy can have a profound effect on both your health and the world we live in.

Welcome Home Team Tanzania!

Welcome Home Team Tanzania!

In partnership with several government and private healthcare facilities in Tanzania, The Phil Simon Clinic Tanzania Project is designed to provide clinical care, education, psychosocial support and infrastructure assistance to those agencies involved in HIV/AIDS, internal medicine and orthopedic and reconstructive surgery.

In 2004, The Phil Simon Clinic Tanzania Project had a team of seven travel to Arusha, Tanzania; in 2005 a team of nine. Flash forward 13 years to 2018 – a team of 60, led by Kimberly Shriner, MD, director, Phil Simon Clinic, have just returned.

The volunteers, who generously donate their time, energy, money and resources to participate, include medical personnel, social workers, microbiologists, kinesiologists, pharmacists, veterinarians and more. Since their first trip, more than 120 Huntington Hospital employees and physicians have made the journey – providing basic health care, medication, HIV and anti-retroviral education, as well as manpower and support.

During their trip this year, they also held a ground breaking ceremony on a permanent clinic building. We’re so proud of the great work they continue to do to help improve the health of people and animals in this impoverished region of East Africa.

Crescenta Valley High School students visit Huntington Hospital to learn the latest in cardiology.

On February 21, students from Crescenta Valley High School visited Huntington Hospital as part of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) STEM Goes Red program. STEM Goes Red is a year-long engagement program which gives high school junior and senior girls the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering and math outside the classroom.

During their visit, the girls attended a presentation by Alex Durairaj, MD, medical director, cardiovascular services, Huntington Hospital, where he shared the latest treatments for coronary heart disease, valve disease and arrhythmias. Following the presentation, Dr. Durairaj answered the girls’ questions and spoke to them about what it is like to choose a career in medicine.

“I was so excited to learn about the latest technological advancements for coronary heart disease, valve disease and arrhythmias treatments,” said Merin Padayatty, STEM Goes Red participant. “I was most surprised to learn how stress has an active role for triggering the formation of plaque in arteries. I’m grateful that at the end of the trip, we were able to have a more personal discussion with Dr. Durairaj and learn about his career path and his passion behind becoming a cardiologist.”

Huntington Hospital is proud to participate in this program with the AHA, not only advancing research and awareness for women’s heart health, but encouraging more women to pursue careers in science and medicine.
