The decision to breastfeed or formula-feed your baby is a personal one. We encourage new mothers to learn about the benefits of breastfeeding so they can make an informed decision.
One of our 49 registered nurses in the Mother Baby Unit will work with you and your newborn on skin-to-skin and breastfeeding support. Our physicians and nurses work diligently to provide education, support and care to mothers and their babies during your stay and when you go home.
Why Breastfeed?
We believe that breast milk is the best milk, and encourage:
- Breastfeeding and/or breastmilk over formula
- Breastfeeding within one hour of delivery
- Skin-to-skin contact to promote breastfeeding
- Learning about feeding your newborn
Ultimately, breastfeeding is your choice. While our hospital supplements with formula only when medically necessary, we understand when parents have personal or cultural preferences for formula — and we provide a caring, supportive environment for every mom and baby.
In 2016, Huntington Hospital was designated as a World Health Organization Baby-Friendly® Hospital. This accreditation highlights Huntington Hospital’s commitment to ensuring that all mothers and their newborns receive the support needed to achieve breastfeeding success and the safest start in infant feeding. This designation is considered the gold standard of care and demonstrates our Women’s and Children’s Services commitment to patient and family-centered care.
Breastfeeding Support During Your Stay
Nursing your baby is a learned skill for both mother and infant, requiring time and patience. While many women are able to successfully breastfeed soon after delivery, some women need assistance to breastfeed their baby.
Our 49 certified registered nurses have extensive experience in supporting breastfeeding for new mothers. You and baby will be monitored closely and provided breastfeeding support by a member of the Baby Bonding Team.
We are not renting breast pumps at this time, due to infection control procedures. Please refer to your New Beginnings booklet for helpful information about feeding your baby. Also, our lactation support staff is also available to help families in the neonatal unit, the pediatrics unit, and lactating moms who may be admitted for other medical issues or tests.
