Huntington Hospital: Baby-Friendly USA (BFUSA)

Huntington Hospital has been awarded the Baby-Friendly designation from Baby-Friendly USA (BFUSA), a credentialing program for hospitals that is part of an international initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF). The award recognizes the implementation of Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes which are evidence-based practices that have been shown to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration. This accreditation highlights Huntington Hospital’s commitment to ensuring that all mothers and their newborns receive the support needed to achieve breastfeeding success.

“The goal of our program has always been to support new mothers with the techniques they need to accomplish their own breastfeeding goals,” said Margaret Legault, MD. “Our physicians and nurses work diligently to provide education, support and care to mothers and their babies, to begin life on a healthy path. This designation highlights our commitment to excellence in maternity care.”

The work of BFUSA and its implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in the United States is predicated on the fact that human milk fed through the mother’s own breast is the normal way for human infants to be nourished. There is an abundance of scientific evidence that points to lower risks for certain diseases and improved health outcomes for both mothers and babies who breastfeed. Breastfeeding is the natural biological conclusion to pregnancy and an important mechanism for the continued normal development of the infant. With the correct information and the right supports in place, under normal circumstances, most women who choose to breastfeed are able to successfully achieve their goal.

The BFHI is a global initiative of WHO and UNICEF. It is implemented in the United States by BFUSA.

Huntington Hospital is a recipient of Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for the 11th consecutive year.

Huntington Hospitaltoday announced that it has received Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. The distinction recognizes Huntington Hospitalas one of the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

“Huntington Hospital is deeply committed to ensuring our patients receive comprehensive compassionate care,” said Stephen A. Ralph, president and CEO, Huntington Hospital. “Being recognized for the past 11 consecutive years as among the top 5% in the nation for the quality of our clinical outcomes, is the result of the hard work and dedication of each and every physician, nurse and employee to address the needs of the people in our community.”

From 2013 through 2015, patients treated in hospitals receiving Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence had, on average, a 26.2% lower risk of dying (across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality is the clinical outcome), than if they were treated in hospitals that did not achieve this distinction. During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence across these 19 procedures and conditions, 160,322 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 25% lower risk of dying from a stroke than if treated at a hospital that did not achieve this distinction.

“Given the variation in quality care across the nation, it’s never been more important for consumers to do their homework when searching for a hospital,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Those hospitals that have received Healthgrades 2017 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence award have proven their long-standing commitment to providing quality care to drive better health outcomes for their patients.”

The 258 recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2017 study period (2013-2015), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures —as measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
