A. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a flexible, tube-like tool called an endoscope to
remove precancerous and cancerous areas in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. “Submucosal” means this procedure targets tumors located
under the lining of the GI tract (mucosa). These tumors can be close to muscle tissue and can be difficult to remove completely with other
methods.
ESD is typically recommended for patients with:
-Early-stage cancerous tumors: This includes lesions in the esophagus, stomach, and colon that have not invaded deeper layers of tissue.
-Precancerous lesions: Such as large polyps that may develop into cancer if left untreated.
-Tumors that are difficult to remove: ESD is often preferred over other methods like endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for larger or irregularly shaped growths that lack clear borders.
ESD is typically an outpatient procedure, and most people go home the same day.
