Nurse Residency Training Program

The new graduate RN Residency Program is designed to support the new graduate hired at Huntington Hospital in the RN’s transition from advanced beginner to competent professional.

Our RN Nurse Residency Program builds upon previous undergraduate nursing education and clinical competencies. The program consists of a series of learning and work experiences designed to assist the new graduate nurse in the transition to their first professional role and become leaders at the patient’s bedside.

The 12-month program includes a centralized onboarding process and orientation, department-specific content and skill development, preceptor and leadership support. 

Residents attend seminars designed to address specific transitions through the first year of practice as a novice nurse.

The seminar topics include:

• Patient safety-minimizing risk
• Leadership
• Communication
• Evidence-based practice
• Professional development

New Graduate RN Nurse Residency Commitment

Each new graduate nurse resident accepted into the program will be expected to:

• Commit to full-time employment for the duration of the program, with continued employment for two years
• Adhere to all hospital guidelines as a member of the professional nursing staff
• Develop and utilize peer and leadership relationships to support professional development
• Participate actively in general and specialized training experiences
• Complete program evaluations for purposes of improvement and outcome data

Huntington Hospital’s Nurse Residency Program is accredited as a Practice Transition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs for the following specialty units:

• Critical Care
• Definitive Observation Unit
• New Grad Float pool
• NeuroStroke
• Neonatal ICU
• Family Birth Center (Labor & Delivery)
• Mother Baby Unit (Maternity)
• Medical
• Medical Surgical Telemetry
• Medical Surgical
• Oncology

Huntington Hospital RN Residency programs are developed in the following areas:

The Residency program will offer three cohorts for 2024.  Start dates and position availability is dependent on unit specific hiring needs. New Grad RN positions posted at  Huntington Hospital careers page prior to the start of each program.

New Grad RN Residency 2024
Winter Cohort	New Employee Orientation January 22, 2024 Applications open in November 2023
Spring Cohort	New Employee Orientation May 13, 2024 Applications open in March 2024
Fall Cohort	New Employee Orientation August 19, 2024 Applications open in June 2024

Requirements to qualify for the New Grad RN Residency Program:

• Graduated from an accredited bachelor’s in nursing or a Master of Science in Nursing.
• Associate in Nursing Degree may be considered for current Huntington Hospital employee, must commit to obtaining a bachelor’s in nursing within three years from date of transfer/promotion.
• Newly graduated Registered Nurse with a total of less than one year of nursing experience in any area by the start of the program.
• Valid California Registered Nursing License at time of application.

A complete application will include the following:

1. An online application, resume and personal statement
2. Please answer these two questions on the top portion of your personal statement
   • Are you currently employed at Huntington Hospital?  If yes, what unit are you currently working in and in what role?
   • What are your top three preferences for employment (1 being first preference, 2 second, 3 third) – Unit hiring availability will be listed at the time of the open application.
3. Your personal statement is an opportunity to help us get to know you beyond what is on your resume. The personal statement should not exceed two pages. The personal statement should include:
   • why have you selected nursing as a profession?
   • what being a nurse means to you?
   • what will you bring to the profession of nursing at Huntington Hospital?
4. When applying please also include:
   • Copies of your unofficial academic transcripts,
   • Two letters of recommendation,
   • A description of any volunteer service you’ve performed and
   • Copies of your California Registered Nurse license (Primary Source Verification document from the BRN Web Site)
   • Certifications (ACLS/BLS).
